BIOGRAPHY

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1944, Julio Larraz is celebrated as one of the most prominent contemporary artists of our time. His journey from the vibrant streets of Havana to the prestigious galleries of the world marks a testament to his unwavering dedication to artistic expression.

Larraz’s upbringing was marked by the political turmoil of his homeland. His father, a political activist was the owner and editor of “La Discusión,” a prominent newspaper in Havana, while his mother pursued law before assuming directorship of the family’s publication. The upheaval of the Cuban dictatorship in 1959 led Larraz and his family to seek asylum in the United States when he was just 16 years old.

Upon arriving in the United States, Larraz channeled his experiences into poignant political caricatures, which found publication in The Washington Post, Vogue, and Time, among others. The political climate that forced him from his homeland would go on to infuse his artistic expression, evident in the subtle political undertones woven into his work alongside recurring motifs of the sea, imagery of people, faces, and locations. Larraz honed his craft with the guidance of his mentor, Burt Silverman, emerging as a luminary in the world of painting.

Larraz’s professional acclaim flourished with his debut solo exhibition at the Pyramid Gallery in Washington, D.C. in 1971, subsequently showcasing his work in galleries across the United States, Europe, and South America. While he garnered renown primarily as a painter, Larraz’s foray into sculpture in the 1970s yielded notable pieces that have graced public spaces and art galleries alike.

Though Larraz has predominantly resided in the United States since leaving Cuba, his artistic journey has been enriched by extensive travels. His sojourn in Italy during the late 90s to early 2000s yielded a profusion of watercolors and sculptures that added depth and dimension to his oeuvre.

Throughout his career, Larraz has received widespread recognition, with his works featured in prestigious galleries and museums around the world. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including recognition from The American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters of New York, cementing his status as a true master of contemporary art.

Central to Larraz’s work is his exploration of the human condition—our hopes, our fears, our dreams, and our struggles. His paintings invite viewers into a world where the mundane becomes magical, where everyday objects take on a life of their own, and where the passage of time is suspended in a moment of quiet contemplation.

As Julio Larraz approaches his 80th year, he continues to fearlessly explore new ideas and push the limits of his imagination, ensuring that his art remains as vibrant and relevant as ever. In a world that is constantly evolving, Larraz stands as a beacon of artistic excellence, reminding us of the transformative power of art to inspire, provoke, and illuminate the world around us.
